Coaching is, first and foremost, a process. It is different in that way from advice. When advice is given, one question is answered. The next time a question arises, advice is needed again. Coaching focuses on the development of skills and habits within one’s self, to meet the challenges of life.
Let’s say Joe and Sam are in an argument. Advice could tell them, “Go with option A,” and that could help for now. But another impasse is just a matter of time. Coaching could help them develop skills to navigate differences in a way that pursues solution and preserves relationship. Coaching could also help them learn to regulate their emotional reactivity, so they are better able to stay engaged and constructive as opinions are explored and a course of action is decided.
Advice is situation-specific. The application of skills is unlimited. Which is the better fit for you?
